New Generation November 2022

We are continuing our effort here in Norman. It is a very hard field as I have mentioned previously. In the last six months we have knocked on many doors and made many contacts in the process, but have seen very little numerical progress. I do however believe that we are seeing some spiritual growth in our discipleship efforts (slow but sure). We would appreciate your continued prayers in this regard.

Thank you all again for the spiritual and monetary support. You are making a difference through your ministry at New Generation Baptist Church.

New Generation October 2022

God continues to pour out his blessings on our group here in Norman as we labor in his field. We continue to share the gospel here and elsewhere as we have the opportunity. I would encourage you to put a spiritual rock in the shoe of those that you encounter daily. What do I mean by that? Engage people in spiritual conversations. One of the best ways I have found is to ask people if there is anything I can do for them. Usually the answer is no, but I then ask them If there is anything that I can pray for them about. I have found that most people welcome having someone pray for them. After I pray for them, this will sometimes open the door for a more spiritual conversation. Be alert, be aware as the Holy Spirit moves in the conversation. These are some examples of some folks I encountered yesterday– telemarketer, delivery person and mail lady.

Below is an excerpt of Chris’s monthly report:

This past month, Luis and I had the opportunity to be ordained by the church.  It was such a blessing to be affirmed in this calling and for there to be such an outpouring of love and support on this special day with a good number of people from outside the church coming to the ceremony.  I know that Luis and I both have an unshakeable call to preach God’s word and shepherd God’s people and that’s what we’ve been trying to be faithful to do over the last several years with Steve’s oversight and encouragement.

We’re not quite a megachurch yet – far from it!  But we’re hanging in there!  We’re trying to be faithful with the people the Lord has given us both in person and online.  And we’re trying to make improvements to the online experience of NGBC, by trying to maximize the sound quality for not only the sermon audio but the music as well.  This is a challenge, but we’ve learned a lot and it’s getting better.  …… ( We’re thankful that some folks from Arizona and Nevada continue to attend online.)…. So we want to make sure they have a good experience as they attend “virtually”.

In addition to our three Sunday services, we are continuing our Wednesday men’s and women’s bible studies through the book of 1 John.  ……

I’m thankful that our church has been used in many wonderful ways to minister to the homeless and needy in Norman over the years.  Drugs, addiction, and homelessness continues to run rampant in our country, but I’m glad our church is not afraid to reach out to these folks and show God’s mercy and compassion, whether it’s at Food and Shelter for Friends, Mission Norman, Church in the Park, or wherever the Lord brings them to us, so that we might show God’s love to them and try to lead them back on the right path.

Thank you all again for the spiritual and monetary support. You are making a difference through your ministry at New Generation Baptist Church.

New Generation September 2022

Greetings again from Norman, Oklahoma. I hope that things are going well in your area of ministry. We are extending our efforts in outreach here. We were part of an outreach called Operation Andrew where we knocked between 150-200 doors. Many of course were not home however we were able to make many contacts.  We had two teams who were involved and were able to share the gospel a few times. Chris’s team had one profession of faith. During the outreach while visiting in some areas we noticed that it seemed to be very spiritually dark, like a demonic oppression. We noticed especially in this one area that a young man who came to the door was dressed in women’s clothing and nail polish. As he opened the door, a rush of marijuana smell hit us in the face. I sure hope that Oklahoma does not approve recreational marijuana use in the future. We have enough problems without adding that to them.

Chris and I were able to attend the BMACO meeting at Grace Harbor in Oklahoma City recently. It was a great time of fellowship with brothers in Christ from other churches. One thing that we talked about was the shortage of young preachers to fill the pulpits of some of our churches which are in decline. Please pray about this issue.

Below is an excerpt from Chris’s monthly report:

……we are also thankful for the wonderful couple, Larry and Cathy from FBC Norman, who supported the efforts of our church in this campaign (outreach).  With Larry and Cathy, I had the opportunity to share the gospel with a young man named Jordan, a kind soul, who ended up praying to receive Christ!  Please pray that he really gets rooted in his relationship with God and that our follow up efforts are successful with him!  I think that what we learned is that Norman is still hard soil, but there are still some of the Lord’s sheep out there to find and there are plenty of prospective homes in Norman that are ready for us to visit (with many families working from home these days.)

We have also begun men’s and women’s bible studies.  I am leading the men’s group and Sue is leading the women’s group through the book of 1 John on Wednesday nights and the Lord has added a few individuals to our number in each of these groups.  Please pray for Robert and Steve (the two men that joined us for the first session) that they will continue coming to services and bible studies and grow stronger in their faith.  Please also pray for Natalie who was baptized at our church over the summer and has been faithfully attending services.  She just came down with COVID, so please pray for her speedy recovery!

………. a couple that attended our church a few years ago have returned and have also attended bible study.  We are seeking to be a firm, but supportive Christian family that will help them remain clean from drug addiction.  Please pray for continuous victory so they can be the example to others struggling to overcome addictions in Norman.

Thank you all again for the spiritual and monetary support. You are making a difference through your ministry at New Generation Baptist Church.

New Generation August 2022

I hope that you are having a good day. Do you have peace in your life? I would certainly be glad to share with you how God has given me peace. My number is at the bottom of this newsletter, so give me a call and we can talk.

We plan to move our services Sunday morning September 11 to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Blanchard, to give our parent church an update on how we are doing. It’s been around 10 years since they sent us to Norman to plant a church and we continue to work in that field. I must say that it has been and continues to be tough, but we are persevering.

We are planning for a great day on September, 25th. We are planning to have an ordination service for two of our young men, Chris Lorenz and Luis Santos. Both are to be ordained as preachers of the gospel. We would love for you all to attend if you can. Those of you who are ordained please feel free to join us in the presbytery.  Here are the specifics:

New Generation Baptist Church Ministerial Ordination

  • Date: September 25th
  • Time: 2:00 p.m.
  • Location: 724 Fairway Drive, Norman, OK 73069
  • Candidates:
    • Bro. Chris Lorenz
    • Bro. Luis Santos

I have included below a report from Bother Chris. He has much more detail on what we have been doing:

Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”  (Revelation 3:20)

Apparently Jesus is a “door knocker”, knocking on the door of our hearts to invite us into fellowship with Himself!  He also promised us that if WE will “knock…it shall be opened unto you.”  (Matthew 7:7)

Recently we have been taking teams out into the neighborhoods of Norman to “knock doors”, and we have been seeing this promise fulfilled –open doors!  As we have been going out, we have had opportunities to pray, encourage, and share the gospel with several people.

Steve and Luis have been doing some outreach, as well as Sue, Natalie, Evelyn, and Rebecca.  Not only folks from our church, but Chris, a meteorologist from the National Weather Center and his friend Larry have been joining us to learn how to do evangelism.  That makes 3 and possibly 4 evangelism teams that we are sending out from our little church, which all started with Steve who began doing evangelism and then inviting me along with him to work together 7 years ago!

We have had some divine appointments in these recent efforts!  One was an 84 year old man named John who had been a widower for 22 years.  As you can understand, he was probably experiencing some loneliness, so he invited us in for an extended conversation about the gospel and prayer!  He was a man that was struggling with faith and had been for many years.  He said “I have been praying to God for 40 years that I would believe.”  So, I said, “well, here we are, the answer to your prayer!”  He did not receive Christ that day, but he is open to us following up with him again.

After meeting John, I was struck by the idea that there are probably millions of others like him who are struggling with having faith in God and withering away in their homes.  They are not only open but eager, even desperate, to have a spiritual conversation if we would simply go out into the community and “knock”.  God does not desire that any should perish, but do we!?  It will require millions of workers to be sent into the harvest if we will fulfill the heart of God to minister to all of these lost and lonely people!

There was also another John that we met through neighborhood outreach just this past Wednesday.  We had been knocking several doors without a good conversation, but then Larry said, “Let’s do one more house.” It’s a good thing he did, because the LORD definitely provided a divine appointment!

We met John and his wife Liz who have two kids and attend Antioch church.  What really caught my attention was how familiar John looked to me, so I asked him, “Did you live in Oklahoma City and go to P.C. North high school?  He said no, but his wife did!  She graduated 2 years before me!  I found out John, on the other hand, grew up and went to school in Edmond, but he attended OU and did a lot of evangelism in the OU dorms…

So, then I remembered that it was my freshman year at the Adams dormitory at OU that a couple older college guys knocked on our door which we opened and allowed them to come in.  I was not yet a Christian at the time so it was very urgently needed that someone was willing to knock on the door to share Jesus with me!

I told John that night, you remind me of the guy that was trying to reach me through personal evangelism!  He couldn’t remember, it was 19 years ago…but was John the one that came to my dorm room that day to share the gospel or someone that looked just like him?  Well, it certainly gave me chills and goosebumps thinking that it might be a possibility that I was now standing at and knocking on HIS door!

Whether it was John, or someone else, or an angel from heaven that visited me that day, that was the first time that I can remember that someone had compassion to share the word of God with me, a complete stranger!  There were others who planted and watered and reaped, but it was God who gave all the growth!  What a reminder that day was to me, that if we will be faithful to sow the seeds of the gospel with the lost who desperately need it, we might discover that one day they have become evangelists that are sowing seeds themselves, making disciples, and continuing to multiply the fruit of our labor for the glory of God!

New Generation July 2022

Thank you again for the privilege of serving folks in Norman in the name of Jesus on your behalf. I have said for quite awhile that our focus needs to be on evangelism and discipleship. This has not changed as we continue to share the gospel both in our Sunday services and also, out in the community. We have had several professions of faith out in the community. Please continue to pray for us in this regard that we will remain faithful.

Luis made several contacts with Hispanic folks out in the city this week and Chris has made many contacts also. Below is an excerpt from Chris’s monthly report:

…It was very encouraging to see Nancy back at church the past few Sundays!  Nancy attended our church for several years before the pandemic and was a volunteer in the apartment outreach at Chapel Ridge.  She moved out of town to live with her daughter, but now she’s eager to rejoin our fellowship thankfully!

Lynn has been kept pretty busy with children ministry at our church.  Sue has been bringing two girls to church, Serenity and Arianna, and of course there is little Lainey that belongs to Melissa and Luis.  With those three, Lynn has her hands full, but it’s of course a good problem to have as it’s always an encouragement to see little ones running around and knowing that they are being brought up in the nurture and admonition of the LORD!

Thank you all again for the spiritual and monetary support. You are making a difference through your ministry at New Generation Baptist Church.

New Generation June 2022

It goes without saying, times are hard! But we have an awesome God, who is able to help us through the difficulties of life and life’s problems. Many people need help and we try to help those that we can, but we also know we can’t help everyone. We must be careful that we don’t hurt people in the process of trying to help them. Just giving someone some money doesn’t usually fix the problem, it may in fact exacerbate it. What people need is Jesus. We need to make sure we give them the gospel.

Brothers Chris and Luis continue to share the gospel through preaching on a regular basis. Melissa, Luis’s wife continues to minister in music and in translating Luis’s messages from Spanish to English. Chris and Luis are both planning to start Bible studies in their homes on Wednesday evenings. My wife, Lynn, has been busy in the nursery lately with seven children last Sunday morning.

This is an excerpt from Chris’s monthly report:

……. A young man named Jeremy who moved here from Colorado has also attended our church after Steve led him to a profession of faith a few weeks at Mission Norman and I followed up with him and gave him a ride to church.  Unfortunately, Jeremy fell prey to a pay day loan scam that wiped out his checking account.  But thankfully the church was able to minister to him both physically and spiritually in his time of need!  It’s a reminder that not only evangelism but consistent follow up with new believers is essential so that we do not leave new Christians as spiritual orphans.

I’m thankful that our church remains faithful to minister to the homeless and needy in Norman through our involvement with Mission Norman, Church in the Park, and Food and Shelter for Friends.  One powerful testimony I heard recently was from a lady named Natalie who has been faithfully attending with her sister Evelyn since last fall.  Natalie has really been growing spiritually over the last several months and just completed an intensive 2-day evangelism clinic with four women from Northeast Baptist and another woman from Tulsa who traveled down for the training that Lester Vogler and I were facilitating ….

Thank you all again for the spiritual and monetary support. You are making a difference through your ministry.

New Generation May 2022

Greetings again from Norman, Oklahoma. We continue in our outreach to the community with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are continuing in our Sunday services, both on line and in the building. We are changing our Wednesday evening service to in-home Bible studies. Bro. Luis and Melissa Santos will be hosting one in their home, with a focus on ministering in a Hispanic context. Bro. Chris Lorenz will be hosting one in his home with more of a focus on folks in his neighborhood. Chris has recently moved to Noble, OK and he has already made several contacts there.

We continue to share the gospel in our community and have seen several professions of faith. Bro. Chris continues in his efforts to spread the gospel as a representative of EE (Evangelism Explosion). He has been training folks in Oklahoma and Texas. He also has plans to return to Mexico for some additional training there.  We ask for your continued support and prayers as we labor here in Norman and elsewhere.

New Generation April 2022

Even though our attendance is small, it has been consistent and does not seem to have been affected by the Covid outbreak the last few years. Our tithes and offerings have been fairly consistent also, even though a lot of our income has come from outside sources. I must brag on God; he is so good to us. He supplies over and above all that we need.

We continue to see professions of faith out in the community when we go out. We need to focus more on our discipleship. We plan to redouble our efforts for one-on-one discipleship. We hope to begin a couple of new Bible studies in the near future also, including one in Spanish.

Brothers Chris, Luis and I were able to attend the BMA national meeting in Springfield, MO. recently. It allowed us to have a great time of fellowship on the trip. We also were able to fellowship with other brothers in Christ which was a great encouragement. In addition, we were able to hear some great preaching and music.

This is an excerpt from Brother Chris’ monthly report:

Regarding the national meeting ….We enjoyed the theme for the week, “Preach the Word”, which is the great passion that Luis and I both share and we were even able to share the gospel with a few guys in our hotel lobby together the last night of the conference.  They did not receive the gospel, but good gospel seeds were sown!

………….I’m thankful for brother Luis and Melissa who have been faithful to minister in our church for many years now.  Luis is not only a hardworking and successful electrician, home renovator, and business owner, he does a good job preaching and Melissa translating and leading worship, and now they are leading a Wednesday night bible study.  I think they’re also planning on going through the Spanish version of EE training with me and Pastor Carlos Caceres in May at his church, Good Shepherd Baptist.   We will also be hosting a two-day EE training event at our church on June 10-11.

Please continue to pray for brother Chris as he will be on the road teaching Evangelism Explosion both here in Oklahoma and in Texas in the next month. If you or your church would be interested in receiving some evangelism training, please let Bro. Chris or I know and we should be able to help you.

Thank you very much for your prayer and support for the ministry here.

New Generation March 2022

Greetings from Norman, Oklahoma and New Generation Baptist Church (Mission).  “To the work! To the work!  We are servants of God; …. Toiling on, Toiling on, so the hymn of days gone by says. Serving God is work as I’m sure you well know. We must keep going and sometimes it’s not so pleasant. Many times, we must work under adverse conditions, but never-the-less we must persevere. We must keep in mind who we are working for.

We continue in our work of spreading the gospel to a lost and dying world. We are encouraged when we see professions of faith and progress in discipleship. Our attendance both on-line and in person continues to hold steady.

We have added a Wednesday evening Bible study recently. At the present time Bro. Luis Santos is leading in this. If you are not involved on Wednesday evening someplace else, we would welcome you to our study. It starts at 7 p.m.

Here is an excerpt from Chris’s monthly report:

Evangelism training is really starting to ramp up with 12 events on the calendar through the end of August, including several Spanish training events in Norman and Texas, two Baptist associational events with potentially 70 churches involved, and a potential children’s evangelism training event coming up as well which would be a great opportunity to start reaching young families with our little church.  God is on the move! We’re just trying to keep up!  Thank you so much for your faithful support, both prayerfully and financially!

If you or your Church would be interested in receiving some training on how to present the gospel in one-on-one situations, please let Chris or I know. I believe we can help you.

Please continue to support and pray for the ministry here. Thanks, we appreciate it.

Please continue to support and pray for the ministry here. Our attendance has been up the last few weeks which seems to be different than most churches are experiencing. If you know of any other people that you think might enjoy this newsletter, please send me their email address and I’ll try to include them in the future or feel free to forward this to them. As always, pray for revival.

New Generation February 2022

Greetings from Norman, Oklahoma. Things are going well here, except for the cold weather we have experienced. We are making some improvements on the building, painting and new flooring. We have also been able to add some additional restrooms and storage. We now have the capability to have more people in the building for training, meetings, etc.

We have plans to start a Wednesday evening service soon. Brother Luis Santos will start us off initially.  Our Sunday morning services consist of teaching at 9:30 and singing and preaching beginning at 10:30. If you are not involved in a Sunday evening service you are welcome to come and join us at 5:00 for preaching and then a time of prayer.

In the near future we plan to ordain brothers Chris and Luis. We also have the hope that this mission will be able to form into a New Testament church soon. We would ask for you prayers in this regard.

Here is an excerpt from Chris’s monthly report:

We just finished the EE “Partners in Discipleship” book with a small group this past week, which is a nice, foundational discipleship book for new believers. I’m glad that Natalie and her sister Evelyn have been participating, as well as a few others who are newer to the church – Lydia and Taraz.  Our discipleship efforts with new believers started last summer with Lee, and since then there has been an ongoing discipleship group consisting of some of our regular attendees, new believers, and visitors from outside the church, studying nearly the full gamut of evangelism and discipleship material together offered by the ministry of Evangelism Explosion.

Please continue to support and pray for the ministry here. Our attendance continues to hold steady with maybe even a slight increase. We are still reaching out-of-state folks in Arizona and Nevada.
